Hey Bestie! It’s time to talk about how to develop a desire to read the Bible. 

I want to start off today’s post with a question.

If you want to do anything, who does it start with? Whatever your answer is will determine the course of how you live your life.

For a long time, I would expect God to just grant me things without putting in much effort. I thought prayer was enough, but I was mistaken because a relationship with God isn’t all on Him nor is it all on me.

It’s a partnership. He is going to do His part and I’m required to do mine if I want to please Him and see the result of a good life. When it comes to developing a desire to read your Bible, it’s also a partnership.

If you’ve been wondering how to develop a desire to read your Bible, the good news is that you’re already half way there.

This post will be all about how to develop a desire to read the Bible.

How To Start Reading The Bible For Beginners

A beginner’s journey is both beautiful and straightforward. If you’re just beginning to spend time with God, I have a few tips for you.

1. Get A Bible That’s Easy To Understand

A great translation to start with is the New Living Translation Bible. This was the translation that I started with and it carried me through to where I am now.

Today I prefer the New International Bible, but I’ll always recommend the NLT.

2. Invest In A Journal 

I always say this: You may not know what to say, but you can always describe how you feel.

Journaling is a great spiritual practice to take part in.

3. A Quiet Place To Be Alone

Your relationship with God is sacred and it’s built through alone time with Him.

During this time, it’s important to remove all distractions. You know, the phone, the TV, and people who may contribute to your loss of focus.

Remember reading the Bible is your personal time with your Bestie Forever.

4. Don’t Think You Have To Know Anything

Don’t put too much pressure on yourself to know or understand what you’re reading. I know it’s easy to fall into the belief that you’re behind or always the last to know.

Something you want to continuously remind yourself is that God is teaching you personally.

So don’t be afraid to ask God what He means by a verse or why something may have occurred in scripture.

Let yourself be curious and use your curiosity as a conversation starter.

5. Choose A Starting Place

Usually people suggest to start in the Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John).

My personal recommendation would be to start in Proverbs so that God can train you in wisdom.

The next place I would suggest is Ecclesiastes so that you can begin to understand what matters most.

Then I would lead you to the gospel of John to learn about Jesus from John’s perspective so that you can meet the One who is wisdom.

How Much Of The Bible Should You Read

Honestly, this is up to you. The amount of scripture you read will most likely vary from day to day depending on how much time you dedicate to it.

When you approach scripture, you may start off reading one or two. But as you continue, you may find yourself reading chunks of the Bible at a time.

Again, it will vary from day to day. Also you can always ask God how much you should read a day. I truly believe that it all depends on how much you want to get to know Him.

What you put into your relationship with Him is what you will get out of it.

How To Develop An Insatiable Desire For Reading The Bible 

1. Start And Continue

To develop a desire for anything, you have to start consuming it.

Overtime desire will develop, but desire cannot exist without discipline so you will need to keep consuming.

2. Ask God

Remember how I stated that this is a partnership at the beginning of the post?

Pray and ask God to help you to develop a desire to read His word.

Your prayer can be something like this: 

“God you said in your word that you give me the desire and the power to do what is pleasing to you so I’m asking you to develop the discipline in me to spend time with you in the Bible. Reveal any distractions and hindrances that are keeping me away from you and help me to get rid of them if they are in my power to do so. In Jesus name”.

3. Have Admiration For Him

Begin to recognize that you’re not just reading a book called the Bible. What you are actually doing is getting exclusive insight into the mind of your Creator.

Immediately upon reading that statement, a negative thought may have popped in your mind saying “it’s not exclusive if everyone can read it”, but I want to challenge that thought:

No one in this world will ever experience the world or the Word like you. God made you a unique individual and He wants you to get to know Him.

The God of existence wants you to get to know Him personally. This is huge!

4. Be Present And Engage

You don’t ever have to show up to God as someone you’re not. We may feel like we have to perform and play the game of life, but your relationship with God is where you can unwind.

You have permission to be your full self with Him. Show up to read the Bible like it means something because it does.

Fully engage in your prayers using them to get to know God and when you recognize His voice respond to Him with action.

When you read your Bible, circle and underline words and phrases that He allows to stand out and use them as prayer points and opportunities to go deeper.

And most importantly, enjoy your time with Him. Laugh with Him. Allow Him to speak back to you in His own way.

He has already met you where you are. Now it’s time to allow Him to help you to meet Him where He is.

5. Add Novelty

You’re always evolving as a human so there’s always more. The more knowledge you receive, the more you’ll realize that you know nothing at all.

As you continue in His word, you’ll notice that there are layers and patterns in scripture that you haven’t seen before. Even the scriptures that you heard time and time again will start to become alive in a new way.

It’s very exciting when God gives you a new revelation or when He connects the dots unexpectedly.

Also, your quiet time with God doesn’t have to be boring and bland. You can switch it up from time to time.

Maybe one day you’ll go on a date with Him and meditate on scripture as you partake in an activity.

You never know, He may have you drive to a place just to show you a practical example of what He’s been teaching you.

Bestie, you can do anything that you put your mind to. This doesn’t mean that it will come easy, but if you really want it you’ll put in the effort.

God already planted the seed in you and it’s up to you to water it. The reason why you want to know how to develop a desire to read the Bible is because God is leading you to do it.

Think about it like this: You have the opportunity of a lifetime to be one of the few people that develops a desire to read the Bible.

Remember many are called and few are chosen (Matthew 22:14 KJV).

Bestie, you were chosen to partner with God so take these tips and apply them one step at a time.
