Hey Bestie! Let’s talk about how to get close to God again.

Almost every believer has experienced this: Being on fire for God to the point of feeling like you’d do anything for Jesus.
During that time, everything felt fresh, alive, and new. But somewhere in the mix, life happened, and your faith blew out.
Tell me Bestie, does this sound familiar?
If you’re reading this, there’s a chance that you’re on the brink of walking away, but you’re willing to try one more time.
You may be a person who really wants God, but you keep falling back into the same habits that keep you away from Him. Maybe you feel numb and prayer doesn’t make sense to you anymore.
Wherever you find yourself, I want you to know that the disconnection you’re feeling isn’t a sign that something is broken without repair.
Before we dive in, I want to ask you one question: What if you’re already as close as you can get to God, but you don’t realize it?
This post will be all about how to get close to God again.
Are you ready? Let’s geaux!
What Does It Mean To Be Close
Being close to someone means that you share a strong emotional bond. It means that you know them very well and there’s a level of intimacy that’s not experienced with anyone else.
Vulnerability is also included in that experience, but when it comes to being close to God, it’s a bit different. Just to state the obvious, we can’t see God.
That alone tells us that our relationship with Him isn’t based on our physical senses. Many of us, including myself, have based our connection with God on whether we “feel” Him or not.
If we aren’t having some sort of emotional experience, then that somehow means that we missed Him. But Bestie, being close to God has very little to do with our feelings.
It’s more about our awareness, openness, connection, and willingness to follow Him. The truth is that we can only relate to God in spirit because we are spirits just as He is.
He took us out of Himself and placed us within physical bodies, but He deals with us as spirits.
This is why He tells us to present our bodies as living sacrifices to Him. He desires for us to honor Him with the things in the physical realm.
Through my own journey of getting closer to God again, there are a few things that we can be conscious of:
1. Awareness
Disconnection doesn’t happen all at once. A connection can slowly decrease over time like a phone battery.
Think about it: Once you take your phone off the charger, the battery decreases throughout the day.
Eventually, your phone notifies you that it needs to be charged.
You’ve already been made aware that “your battery” has been low. Now it’s time to think through what has caused the disconnection.
I want you to journal through a few questions with God:
- When did you notice the disconnection?
- How was your relationship with God before this happened?
- What may have caused the disconnection?
- Where has your focus been lately?
- Has your relationship with God been based on how you feel and what you do?

2. Openness
The way we connect with God is different from how we connect with people. Again God is Spirit and the only way we can truly connect with Him is spiritually.
Have you ever wondered why God doesn’t just give you what you want when you’re emotional? It’s because He wants to teach us how we’re really supposed to function.
A huge piece of this is learning not to lean on our own understanding. We must become open to doing things God’s way instead of our own.
Think about it like this: When you were little, going to school was totally different than being at home. You had to learn to adjust to a new structure.
You didn’t know what school would be like, but you were eager and curious to learn from your teachers.
Getting closer to God again requires that same kind of openness.
3. Connection
If you had an answer to a problem on your phone, but it was dead, what would matter most? Would it be finding the answer or getting yourself a charger first?
I think we would all agree that getting the phone connected to the charger would matter most. We’d probably also agree with this statement: Connection is greater than solutions.
I want you to think through this question: Am I approaching getting closer to God again like it’s a problem to solve?
In a friendship, you aren’t constantly trying to fix things. For the most part, you’re just enjoying each other’s company.
So why are we approaching God like He is just another handyman in our lives?
Connection with God matters far more than Him fixing our problems.
Yes, we have real problems that need solutions, but nothing can be solved without a true connection with the One who is able to fix them.
4. Willingness
In a healthy relationship, you feel safe to make mutual decisions. This is developed through faith, work, and consistency.
Over time, you and your person grow in trust, so you become willing to walk through the unfamiliar together.
I believe that God is saying this to all of us who desire to get close to Him again:
I want you to trust me, but can I ask you a real question? How will you ever learn to trust me if you’re afraid to walk in my ways? You have to be willing to at least try things My way.
Not just through word, but through action. It’s one thing to tell me that you will, but it’s another to actually do it. My love, you are not alone in anything you go through. I am with you.
If you want something different, it’s available for you. You will have to partner with me to adjust so that you can experience the things you desire.
Are you willing to try things My way this time?
Now that we talked through some things to be conscious of, let’s talk about how to put them into practice.

3 Ways To Reconnect With God Again
Bestie, how would you reconnect with an old friend? We complicate things because it’s God, but what if we approached Him as we would approach a friend?
1. Pursue The Relationship
To pursue something means to actively and intentionally show interest. It’s a choice to invest time, attention, effort, and energy into getting to know someone.
Think about if you were reconnecting with an old friend that you haven’t spoken to in a while. You wouldn’t start by sending them a super long essay recapping everything that’s happened in your life.
You’d probably send a short and sweet text message like: “Hey, you crossed my mind recently. How have you been?”
Then you would probably make plans to catch up. Eventually through hanging out, the friendship will become familiar again.
What if getting close to God again was that simple?
Here’s How That Could Look Practically With God:
-
Plan A Meeting Time
One of the simplest ways to pursue God is to make space for Him. Pick a time you’re at your best and protect it.
Trust me Bestie, it doesn’t have to be at 5 a.m. and you don’t have to spend hours reading the Word.
Your time with God isn’t meant to be this rigid, stale moment and it isn’t meant to look like someone else’s quiet time.
Realistically:
- You may only have 15 minutes before the kids wake up.
- Maybe you would want to meet Him walking on the track every morning.
- You might want to meet with God on your driveway every morning to watch the sunrise together.
This isn’t about making the picture-perfect spiritual routine. It’s about meeting with your Bestie Forever.
Also, missing the time you set doesn’t mean you have to wait until the next day. You can choose a different time and continue with your Friend as normal.
-
Read His Word Like A Conversation
When I’ve reconnected with old friends in the past, I loved getting their text messages. You know why?
It’s because I loved hearing from them. I wasn’t looking to read their resume or question them about certain things. It was just fun, light-hearted conversation.
So when you read the Bible, here’s what you can do:
- Read the passage slowly as if God is revealing everything to you personally.
- Don’t pressure yourself into reading a full chapter or even several verses.
- Start with something you’d like to know.
Maybe you need hope for your situation. You can do a word study on hope in that case. Ask God about His thoughts on hope and go find it in His word.
Then read the verse with Him and respond to it by making it personal to you (Listen to the audio of this post to understand this concept fully).
-
Enjoy Your Time Together With No Strings Attached
No one likes to be used. We all know that, but we don’t think about that when it comes to God.
It’s because we’re used to coming to Him when we need something. I mean, we literally have laundry lists of what He can fix for us.
- “God I need help with the kid’s uniforms”.
- “Lord please fix my credit”.
- Jesus, I need you to lead me on which school to choose”.
Bestie, there’s nothing wrong with bringing our needs to God, but how would you respond to someone always looking to take from you?
What if we could start going to God simply because we want Him?
Not for what He can do, but just to get to know Him.
Practical steps TO Try Today:
- Set a timer for 10 minutes.
- Put the phone at a distance from you.
- Grab your Bible and journal.
- Flip to your favorite scripture and read the verses before and after it.
- Ask: “God, what are you saying to me?”
- Write what comes to mind and respond to Him.
This is how you make one step toward connection.
2. Become Familiar With Who He Is
Spending time getting to know each other is what you do to build a relationship. You never have to force a connection.
When you spend time with someone you learn their voice, the cadence of their voice, what matters to them, and how they communicate.
In other words, you learn their character.
Practical steps TO Try Today:
Next time you read the Bible, pretend that you’re making eye contact with God.
Think through and answer questions like:
- What is He like?
- What are some things that He loves?
- How would He handle this situation?
- What are His values?
- What are His boundaries?
- Does He hate anything?
- How does He describe Himself?
- Does He have any nicknames?
- What are His thoughts on friendship?
- Why does He do _________?
- What does He mean by ________?
All of these questions give you a chance to find out who God really is. You’re not just collecting scriptures for times of trouble; you’re getting to know the heart of the One who has always been with you.
The more familiar you become with Him, the more you’ll recognize how to walk through this life along with Him.
3. Setting Healthy Boundaries
Now let’s talk about something that doesn’t always make it into conversations about getting closer to God.
Boundaries. We usually think about setting boundaries for others, but every intelligent person knows that they must limit themselves also.
Can we be honest for a second?
Sometimes the problem isn’t that God isn’t speaking to us. Many times, we are too distracted by everything going on around and within us.
- Our phones are always in our hands.
- We’re always watching content.
- We spend hours working to get money, but we give God ten minutes of our time.
Then we go to God expecting a new word or direction when we haven’t followed the last instruction.
At some point, we have to make sacrifices for what we truly need and desire.
- Maybe it’s putting the phone away for a few hours.
- Maybe it’s changing what content you consume.
- Maybe it’s letting everything earthly go for some time in order to reconnect spiritually.
The biggest question for us all is: How bad do you want your relationship with God?
If I say I want to walk with God, but my actions are consistently refusing to go where He’s leading, then I have to readjust.
Trust can only be developed with God through obedience, and if we’re real; we just don’t like to be told what to do.
Practical steps TO Try Today:
Ask yourself what needs a boundary.
Journal through these questions:
- What is consistently distracting you from God?
- What do you keep making room for that’s not helping you to grow?
- What have you been praying to God for, but refusing to obey?
- What boundary would create more room for your relationship with God?
Choose one thing you know you need to set boundaries with and make a practical decision to follow through.
Example:
My phone has been taking too much of my time. Boundary-I’m going to put my phone away from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. to spend time with God.
Whatever boundary you set, allow it to serve the relationship.
Bestie, you don’t have to become a completely different person or force a connection to reconnect with God. The only thing you have to do is choose to be in the relationship.
Choose Him by making room for Him, listening to Him, and responding to Him with action.
What if you were never truly disconnected from Him? What if you only needed to be reminded that He’s always been near?
This post was all about how to get close to God again.
Before You Go…Let’s Recap
Here are a few reminders of what it means to be close to God:
- Being close to God has very little to do with feelings.
- It’s all about your awareness, openness, connection, and willingness to become one with Him.
- There isn’t anything complicated about it. It’s very similar to reconnecting with an old friend.
