Are you ready? Let’s geaux!
What is Adversity
Adversity is usually described as any misfortune or hardship you experience. But for the believer it’s a little different.
Because we come from a culture where everything can be turned for our good, adversity can be looked at as an opportunity.
Here’s a few ways you can define adversity:
- The perfect meeting place for you and God (Genesis 16:6-12).
- An opportunity for your faith to produce perseverance and for perseverance to help mature and complete you (James 1:2-4).
- A time where you can receive true comfort (2 Corinthians 1:4, Psalm 23:4).
- An opportunity to share in Christ’s sufferings (1 Peter 4:12-13).
- A set up so that you can remember who cares about you (1 Peter 5:7).
- The best character development method of God.
- An opportunity for God to show you Himself and strengthen your heart (1 Peter 5:10).
- A time to test where your loyalty lies (Job 2:10)
- Proof to Satan that he cannot break the soul of God’s anointed.

How to Overcome Adversity
You have the ability to overcome adversity because of who lives inside of you.
The same Spirit who raised Christ from the dead is alive inside of everyone who has given their lives to Jesus.
These nine ways will help you to harness your ability to overcome adversity so that you can have the upper hand from now on.
1. Expect It
1 Peter 4:12 ESV-Dear friends don’t be surprised at the fiery trials you are going through as if something strange were happening to you.
Jesus gave us a fair warning about adversity, but He also gave us reassurance about how it will not overtake us.
What if He spoke this to you before you were in your mother’s womb? Perhaps He made sure that you knew adversities would happen, but is reminding you now that you have the ability to overcome them.
Think about it as if you’re preparing dinner for your friends and family and you’ve given them a time to show up. Because you gave them the time, you expect them to show up for or around that time.
Adversity has to be treated the same way. You have to expect it to come and welcome it.

2. Don’t Try To Circumvent Difficulties
Philippians 2:13 ESV-For God is working in you giving you the desire and power to do what pleases him.
When you try to take the easy way out, you mask your need for Jesus and close the door on an opportunity to see what you’re actually made of.
You are more capable than you think. Becoming a follower of Christ allows you to access the power needed to triumph in this life.
The truth is that you won’t be able to do it on your own, but you can always depend on Him.
Your ability to overcome adversity is found in Him.
3. Anticipate The Impossibilities
Matthew 19:23 ESV-Humanly speaking it is impossible but with God everything is possible.
There will be situations that are beyond your ability to handle. In those moments, your mind will put you in a state of fight or flight.
Being a kingdom citizen, your instinct is to fight because you know who is in the battle with you. You are not walking hand in hand with a God who is distant from you, but you are walking with the God who makes the impossible possible.
He is the one who gets in your situation with you and holds you up to show you that with man it is impossible but with Him everything is possible.
Impossibilities will be there so you can get a clear picture of how powerful God is.

4. Embrace Your Weaknesses
2 Corinthians 12:9 ESV-Each time he said, “My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness”. So now I am glad to boast about my weaknesses so that the power of Christ can work through me.
Your inadequacy is nothing to be ashamed of. When you can’t, there is always Someone who can.
Your weaknesses do not make you less than for His strength is made perfect in your weakness. It’s okay to allow yourself to be weak.
This is the place that God wants to reveal Himself to you.
Your weakness are one of the best places to encounter His glory and be a witness to His power.
5. Cling Onto His Presence
Romans 8:31 ESV-If God is for us who can ever be against us.
Bestie, the adversary will try to get you to look at God as the bad guy. Remember what Jesus told you about this world.
He said “In this world you will have trials and tribulations, but take heart because He has overcome this world” (John 16:33 ESV).
To overcome adversity, you must hold onto what He said regardless of what you see. This is how you cling onto His presence.
Remember what God has promised you. Rehearse what He has said in His Word about you. Remind yourself that He is for you and not against you.
The trick of the adversary has been the same since the Garden of Eden. He did not cause Adam and Eve to eat the fruit by telling them that it tastes good.
What he did was cause them to think that God was withholding something from them. He won’t be able to trick you because you will cling to God’s presence.
God is for you Bestie, not against you.
6. Allow Him To Fight For You
Psalm 46:10 ESV-Be still and know that I am God! I will be honored by every nation. I will be honored throughout the world.
When all of the problems arise, cry out to Jesus! Allow His Holy Spirit to fight for you. When you have done all you can do, be still.
God wants to fight on your behalf. He is fighting for you as you read this! This battle is not a battle against flesh and blood enemies even if that’s what it looks like.
Your boss, co-worker, mom, ex, child, and that grocery store worker doesn’t even know that this fight is spiritual.
So put on every piece of God’s armor so you will be able to overcome adversity and resist the adversary at the time of evil.
Then after the battle you will be standing firm. Stand your ground by putting on your belt of truth and the body armor of God’s righteousness.
For shoes, put on the peace that comes from the good news so that you will be fully prepared. In addition to all of these hold up the shield of faith and put on salvation as your helmet then take the sword of the Spirit which is the Word of God.
Put on the armor and pray with a smile on your face because you know your Bestie Forever is fighting for you!

7. Practice What You Preach
James 1:22-25 ESV-But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror. For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forget what he was like. But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing.
The saying “do as I say, not as I do” is for people who live their lives hypocritically.
You want to be practitioner, not a researcher when it comes to life.
Or as the book of James puts it: A doer of the word and not just a hearer of it.

8. Allow Yourself To Be Authentic
1 Corinthians 7:17 ESV-Only let each person lead the life that the Lord has assigned to him, and to which God has called him. This is my rule in all the churches.
Who cares what other people think when you’re the one that has to live your life? When will you stop allowing people’s opinions to control you?
Live the way that God created you to live.
9. Check In Always
2 Corinthians 13:5 NIV-Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith; test yourselves. Do you not realize that Christ Jesus is in you-unless, of course, you fail the test?
Your mental health is extremely important. Adversity can be taxing on your soul (mind, will, and emotions) so checking in with God, yourself, and others is crucial.
Do you have any coping strategies that you can practice when adversity arises?
Some examples of coping strategies are:
- Exercising (yoga, walking, weightlifting, running, stretching, etc.)
- Talking On The Phone
- Practicing Breathwork
- Watching Comedy
- Prayer
- Meditation
- Studying
- Taking A Bath
- Having A Spa Day
- Getting A Massage
- Performing A Self Care Ritual/Routine
- Journaling
Adversity will happen so expect it. When it arises, there will be many impossibilities so anticipate them. Embrace your weakness because God’s strength is made perfect in them.
