What Does It Actually Mean To Be Called By God

Let’s talk about being called by God.

called by God

Many of us have the knowledge that we’ve been called but we don’t know what it means. If I am honest, I always expected that being called by God meant that things would change in an instant.

The reality is that even if you’re called by God, you still have to go through the process of being consecrated and that means that you will be embracing the waiting season.

In this post, we’ll explore what it really means to be called by God, five types of callings in the Bible, how you know you’ve been called by God and more!

This post is all about being called by God.

Are you ready? Let’s geaux!

What Is A Calling From God

A calling is described as a strong urge towards a particular way of life. Some other words to describe it is mission, profession, occupation, or my personal favorite, purpose.

Every one of God’s creations was intentionally designed and assigned a purpose before arriving to the Earth.

Not all purposes are known to man, but we each have a distinct reason for why we were created.

A calling from God is an invitation to step into the purpose you were destined to live out. It’s an opportunity to be the individual that you are and walk in your true authenticity.

God knew you before you were in your mother’s womb and He chose you to be a witness of His glory (Jeremiah 1:5, Isaiah 43:10).

The calling on your life may be an explanation of why the series of events have been unfolding in your life. You’re not crazy or alone in any of it.

You are being consecrated; separated for a sacred purpose and time.

What Does The Bible Say About Being Called By God

While it would be easy to just point you to scripture, I need to tell you what the Bible actually means by being called by God.

The Bible often mentions people being called by God for certain purposes.

For example, Moses was called by God to lead the Israelites to the promised land. Paul was called by God to be an apostle and to preach the Good News to the Gentiles.

And even Jesus’ calling was to proclaim good news to the poor, proclaim freedom for the prisoners, recovery of sight of the blind, to set the oppressed free, and proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor (Luke 4:18-19 NIV).

But what about you? Does any of this have anything to do with you? You may be wondering “What does the Bible say about my calling”?

5 Types Of Callings In The Bible

Only God can tell you why He sent you to the Earth. In order to know your purpose, you have to go to your Source.

While no creation can give you the reason for your specific existence, there are a few universal callings each believer is called to live out.

calling by God

1. We Are Called To Repent

Matthew 4:17 NIV-From that time on Jesus began to preach, “Repent, for the Kingdom of heaven has come near”.

The very first calling is the first declaration spoken by Jesus. He said to repent for the Kingdom of heaven has arrived.

Repenting has nothing to do with confessing your wrongs to God. It means to change the course of your life and go back to the original mind.

Being born and raised in this world we’ve been conditioned to adopt other people’s beliefs, culture, wills, morals, values, and lifestyles.

Jesus’ first public declaration was for all of us to go back to our origin which is the Kingdom way of living under His tutelage.

2. We’re Called To Seek The Kingdom

Matthew 6:33 NIV-But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all things will be given to you as well.

The next calling is to seek the Kingdom. When Jesus spoke “the Kingdom of Heaven is near”, what He meant was that the fullness of it was inside of Him and He would give us access to it again.

The Kingdom of God isn’t anything you can see, but it is manifested through actions. It is living a life of righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit (Romans 14:17 NIV).

To seek means to desire to know and search out the culture and customs of your original home. Heaven is a real place, a country if you will.

It’s the first of creation and the reason why Earth was manifested. By faith, we understand that the universe was formed at God’s command so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible (Hebrews 11:3 NIV).

For in Him all things were created, things in Heaven and on Earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities. All things have been created through Him and for Him (Colossians 1:16 NIV),

3. We Are Called To Live By Faith

Hebrews 11:6 NIV-And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to Him must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who earnestly seek Him.

You were never supposed to live based on the education of this world. God designed mankind with the innate knowledge of self and desired for us to live through revelation.

We aren’t supposed to know everything and that is on purpose. This is why He says that the righteous shall live by faith (Hebrews 10:38 NIV).

Faith, by definition, is the substance of things hoped for and the evidence of things that are unseen (Hebrews 11:1 ESV).

Without faith, you couldn’t give your live to Jesus and without giving your life to Jesus, you couldn’t explore the Kingdom.

4. We’re Called To Receive And Give Love

1 Corinthians 13:4-8 NIV-Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor other, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protect, always trust, always hopes, and always perseveres. Love never fails.

The root of your existence is love. No matter what you’ve experienced or are currently going through, you need to understand that God loves you.

God is known as many things, but He is rarely known as Love. The Bible says in 1 John 4:8 that “Anyone who doesn’t love doesn’t know God because God is love”.

You may have gone through really tragic things in life, but the fact that you’re still here, in your right mind is proof that you are loved.

5. We Are Called To Suffer Well

James 2:2-4 NIV-Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.

Let’s be real: No one enjoys suffering, but suffering is an inevitable experience.

Jesus literally promised that in this world, we will have trials and tribulations but we can rest because He has already overcome the world (John 16:33 ESV).

Suffering isn’t something to look at as a bad thing. Instead, we can glean the lessons from it and use it as a refiner and a teacher.

Suffering is built into this life for a purpose and one of its purposes is  to show us how resilient God created us.

Does Everyone Have A Calling From God

Matthew 22:14 ESV-For many are called, but few are chosen.

Every person on Earth was created with the intent to impact the world in a significant way. Each of us were created as an expression of God for a specific purpose that only He can disclose.

And guess where He put it? Inside of us!

Your calling will not look like the next person’s calling. Collectively, we all have one purpose which is to make the Earth look just like heaven, by partnering with God, and living out our Kingdom mandate which is dominion.

But we also have individual purposes within the collective.

Many are called, but the few that are chosen are the people who answer the call.

Will you be one of them?

How Do You Know You’re Called By God

When I realized that God was calling me to do Blissful-Faith, there were a few things that I noticed. First, I found myself really distraught about how people really didn’t understand who they really were.

I witnessed many chasing after money, slaving away at jobs, and those who just weren’t happy with their lives.

I realized that was a hint to the problem that I was created to solve.

Next, I began writing out a plan that was so much bigger than me. I felt as if I were dreaming it into existence with every word I had written down (One day I will show it as proof of what God has done!)

Then, people would be hinting at my gifts and asking me when I would start writing again.

And finally God re-presented the idea back to me with additional information through someone who had no idea about the vision He allowed me to write down in my room.

When you’re called by God, you will know because you won’t be able to shake the thought of it.

It’s something that you won’t be able to run from and if you do then you’ll be living in regret.

Gods calling quotes

What Does It Mean To Be Called And Chosen By God

To be called and chosen by God means to share in the knowledge and love of Jesus Christ. The strong urge towards a particular way of life is the gateway to your purpose.

God is inviting you to step into the very reason why you were created. He chose you to partner with Him to meet the need of a particular problem.

All of the gifts and the call He has for your life are irrevocable (Romans 11:29 ESV) . You’ve been called and chosen to do something significant in this world and where you are right now does not disqualify you.

As long as you have breath in your lungs, it’s not too late to pursue your God-given calling.

May God bless you in the knowledge of whose you are and who you are. I pray that He reveals  exactly why you were sent to this Earth. Again, it doesn’t matter where you started or where you are right now, the purpose on your life is irrevocable. May you always be reminded of God’s love for you. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
