Hey Bestie! It’s time to learn how to face adversity like a boss!
Have you been dealing with adversity lately? An adversity can be described as any hardship, misfortune, difficulty, or troubling situation.
Being on Earth actually qualifies you to face adversity. Adversity isn’t anything that you should try to run from. The whole point of it is so that you can overcome.
God allows adversity to happen so that you can realize who you are and whose you are. It’s a tool used to strengthen your God-given character!
This post is all about how to face adversity like a boss!
Are you ready? Let’s geaux!
Learning To Face Adversity In The Workplace
Anytime you deal with people you’re bound to run into some type of adversity. In the workplace, adversity may be:
- Your boss piling work on you.
- Coworkers being gossiping about you.
- Your manager abusing his/her authority.
- The timekeeper playing with your hours.
- Your coworkers being difficult.
- Getting intentionally scheduled every weekend.
- Being overworked and underpaid.
To face adversity in the workplace, you must first remember who you are. There shouldn’t be anyone that you allow to take you out of your character.
Just because someone is rude or petty towards you doesn’t mean that you have to match their energy. You’re called to live your life above reproach and be a light in the darkness.
You know that God calls you the light of the world (Matthew 5:14 NIV). Light here means knowledge. You are the knowledge of the world.
Because you know that people are made in the image after the likeness of God; you have to treat them accordingly. This doesn’t mean that you allow anyone to walk all over you, but it does mean that you handle all situations with class and godliness.
Bestie, unfortunately everyone doesn’t know how wonderful they are. While it isn’t necessarily your job to show them; you can allow God to shine through you by practicing what he’s already given you.
Let’s take a look at what the Bible says about overcoming adversity.
The Art Of Overcoming Adversity Bible Edition
The Bible is full of truths that you can apply in your daily life. I like to think of the Bible as the memory book that has recordings of every experience known to man.
If you’ve ever read the Bible then you know that the people in there have faced many adversities. While there are many scriptures on adversity, I’d like to focus on one.
James 1:2-4 AMP says this:
Consider it nothing but joy my brothers and sisters whenever you fall into various trials. Be assured that the testing of your faith (Through experience) produces endurance (leading to spiritual maturity and inner peace). And let endurance have its perfect result and do a thorough work so that you may be perfect and completely developed (in your faith) lacking in nothing.
Adversity is important. When adversities come it’s to strengthen your faith. They have only but one hob which is to strengthen your character.
When it comes to adversity, perspective is everything. It’s easy to take on a victim’s mentality, but there comes a time that you’ll need to flip the switch like James 1:2-4 AMP says.
What is the last adversity you went through? How did you respond/react? Did you realize that it only happened for you growth?
Growth can be painful. Pain isn’t a bad thing either. Pressure can also be painful but like pain, it doesn’t last forever. The results of it however are eternal.
Many people use the example of a diamond in regard to pressure, but I’d like to present a different example to you. I want you to think of your body going through a cold.
When you have a cold, your body exhibits symptoms that you may look at as negatives. You get a runny nose, head and back aches, cough, congestion, sneezing, and you may even throw up.
But do you know that these symptoms are actually good things? These symptoms are your body working to detox itself and keep you alive for as long as possible.
The body is truly incredible. None of the symptoms you experience during a cold “feel” good, but they are good and many only get a cold when seasons change.
Adversity is similar to a seasonal cold. It comes to benefit you, not to harm you. It’s something you should look forward to rather than avoid because its for your good.
It doesn’t feel good and its darn right painful sometimes, but it doesn’t last forever!
What About Leading Through Adversity
As a leader, there is constant pressure to be a positive example for those following you. Whether you’re a parent, government official, therapist, pastor, friend, doctor, teacher, influencer, or respected individual leadership doesn’t stop adversity.
When you’re leading, adversity actually comes more frequently. My advice to leaders is to always lead with being your authentic self.
Take the pressure off of you trying to present your best and lead with transparency and honesty through the adversity. Doing this is giving your best.
Remember this isn’t a performance for others, but its the Perfector perfecting you. You don’t have to show every little piece of your experience, but you also don’t have to pretend that you’ve been through every type of testing.
Be you. The best way to lead is to lead through humility, honesty, openness, transparency, and authenticity. It’s okay to be vulnerable; you’re human,
What if God is allowing the adversity to happen so that you can put the pride away? Maybe he’s trying to get you to be humble in Him.
You were born to lead because you are a god, but you have to be shaped in godly leadership.
5 Ways To Overcome Adversity
1. Stay Connected To Your Source
You can’t navigate this life alone. Adversity is a part of life and if you could do it on your own then you wouldn’t be reading this post.
Staying connected to the Most High is the true key to overcoming adversity. He can give you personal ways to navigate through your individual experience while giving you insight through another person’s.
2. Remember Adversity’s Purpose
Adversity is only allowed to strengthen your God-given character no matter how it comes. As long as you carry the right perspective and are willing to change your mindset, you’ll overcome!
3. Practice What You Preach
The saying “do as I say, not as I do” is for people who live their lives hypocritically. You want to be practitioner, not a researcher when it comes to life. Or as the book of James puts it: A doer of the word and not just a hearer of it.
4. Allow Yourself To Be Authentic
Who cares what other people think when you’re the one that has to live your life? So many reading this are afraid to be themselves in front of others because of potential judgement.
Why do you give others so much power over your life? Live the way that God created you to live. There will be times where you get angry and you might cuss. You may overeat every now and then. There are days when you won’t want to be bothered.
And you might want to wear something that you really like that others won’t. Be who you are even through the adversity because you’re a work in progress.
This life is not about perfection. It’s all about progression.
5. Check In Always
Your mental health is extremely important. Adversity can be taxing on your soul (mind, will, and emotions) so checking in with God, yourself, and others is crucial.
Do you have any coping strategies that you can practice when adversity arises? Some examples of coping strategies are:
- Exercising (yoga, walking, weightlifting, running, stretching, etc.)
- Talking On The Phone
- Practicing Breathwork
- Watching Comedy
- Prayer
- Meditation
- Studying
- Taking A Bath
- Having A Spa Day
- Getting A Massage
- Performing A Self Care Ritual/Routine
- Journaling
There are many coping strategies you can try including ones that aren’t listed. Having a coping strategy is useful to practice good habits because adversity is guaranteed to come like your monthly bills!
