If you spend loads of time by yourself, you may be called names like loner. But what if spending time alone is one of the best things that you can do.
Humans are social by nature, but there are times where you NEED to be alone. It’s not just an introvert thing.
This post will be all about the unexpected benefits of spending time alone.
Are you ready? Let’s geaux!
What Is The True Meaning Of Alone Time
Alone time is the time where you get to be completely free with yourself. It is a opportunity for you to hear yourself without distraction from the world.
In these moments, you can finally process what has happened throughout your day without interference. It’s a time when you can take a step back and acknowledge how you feel apart from everyone else.
Alone time allows you to get to know yourself on a deeper level. It doesn’t happen all at once though.
Think of it as a TV series, your knowledge of self will come like an episode as you spend time with yourself.
6 Benefits Of Spending Time Alone
The greatest commandment is to love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, soul and mind. The second which is equally important is to love your neighbor as yourself (Matthew 22:37-39).
For so long you have tried to love God and our neighbors, but you’ve skipped the connection between the two.
Trying to love God and your neighbor without loving yourself is like having two pieces of bread with nothing in between but claiming that you have a sandwich.
If you don’t love yourself, you won’t be able to love your neighbor. It won’t work.
In order to be able to start the process of loving yourself, you have to begin to spend time alone. It can be scary at first but there are many benefits like:
1. Developing True Intimacy With God
Having relationship with God is essential to human life. You need to have constant connection with God because you came from him.
Any healthy relationship is one that requires a level of intimacy that challenges you to go deeper. Your relationship with God is no different.
He was stripped bare publicly on the cross so that you can be comfortable baring it all in front of him.
2. Understanding Who You Really Are
The world has conditioned you to think that you are what you do. That’s a HUGE lie! Jobs, status, money, cars, grades, and clothes are the world’s way of ranking people.
None of these things make you who you are. All they do is expose the level of insecurity and brokenness that we are at.
It’s one thing to know your identity in Christ and have these things and another if these things have you.
Chasing after something that seems to bring you status will leave you with no sustenance. When you get the chance to be alone, God helps you to understand who he has created you to be.
3. Questioning Occurs
Questioning things can be taboo in the world we live in because change is scary for us. Spending time alone can help you to answer questions like: “What do I think? How do I actually feel? Is this how I want to live or is this how it’s always been?”
Being alone is a powerful way to liberate yourself and help you to think for yourself. It’s cool to spend time with others but it’s not cool to take on their thoughts without having your own.
Everything you’ve been taught is not the way that things should be in your life. It may be time for you to start questioning things.
4. Discovering Your Own Voice
When you have your own mind, you have your own voice. This is not to say that you have to rebel against everything said, but it does give you the power to receive and reject things that don’t align with your life.
Everything starts within your mind, even your voice. You are reading this right now with the voice in your head.
What if that voice was drowned out by all of the distractions of the world? Then you would be losing a piece of your soul. Your soul is your mind, will, and emotions.
Spending time alone is your rite of passage to discover your own voice and nourish your soul which leads to the next benefit.
5. Gained Confidence
Whoever you rock with, becomes your confidence. You start to put your trust in them. When you spend time alone, you start to put that trust in yourself, which helps you to gain confidence.
Once you’re able to see you, you’re able to get to know you, then you were able to trust you, and finally gain confidence.
6. Becoming More Appreciative Of Others
As you start to spend time alone, your love for yourself grows. It grows so much that you start to appreciate you. If you grow to love and appreciate yourself more, then you will project that love and appreciation onto others.
When this happens, you are being obedient to the most important commandment and your relationships grow stronger as a result.
What About Having Alone Time With God
There wouldn’t be any of this without God. More than likely if you are in Christ, God will lead you to a season where being alone is the only option.
Take advantage of this, because this is a blessing! Having alone time with God means that you are alone with the Creator of the entire universe.
You are with the One who started it all! He created all of the beauty within you and all around you. God‘s desire is to spend time with you alone.
It’s not enough to listen to a pastor on a Sunday morning. You have to get to know him for yourself and that only happens when you spend time alone with him.
