The very first step to changing your story is done believe it or not. Are you aware that you already took the first step?
You should be extremely proud of yourself for even recognizing that you needed to change your story.
Before you go any further, I want to give you some self reflection questions to help you continue your inner work as you begin rewriting your story.
Here are 9 self reflection questions that can help you along your journey:
- Why do I need to rewrite my story?
- Am I repeating the same bad habits over and over?
- What is it that I’m looking to gain from rewriting my story?
- Is changing my story for myself, others, or both?
- Do I believe that God led me down this path? Why/why not?
- Am I okay with doing this alone?
- What areas am I experiencing low self esteem?
- How do I think this will boost my confidence?
- What will help me to stay the course when it gets tough?
Changing your story won’t happen without a plan. These self reflection questions will help you to put your plan on paper and keep you grounded throughout your journey.
My suggestion would be to keep a journal handy because you’ll be writing a lot. You can also give audio journaling a try as well!

One of the most powerful techniques for rewriting your story is journaling. Taking time to write down your thoughts, feelings, and experiences can help you to see where you are and where you desire to be. It can help you to reflect on your journey once you’re in a new place.
Most times, we don’t realize that we’re living in an answered prayer and journaling helps you to remember what God has done.

5 Steps To Rewrite Your Story
There is power in rewriting your story. As said before, your story starts within your mind so your mind needs to be renewed.
Rewriting your story is a soul issue. Your soul is your mind, will, and emotional parts of your being. Luckily, if your story didn’t start well; you have all the power you need to rewrite it.
Here are the steps to rewriting your story:
1. Identify Your Current Story
To begin to rewrite your story, it’s important to first identify the story you are currently telling yourself. This involves getting quiet to reflect on the beliefs, thoughts, and patterns that have been guiding your actions and decisions.
By becoming aware of your current story, you can start to understand how it may be holding you back from releasing the potential that God has placed inside of you.
One of the biggest problems you may notice is that you self sabotage and this first step can help you to recognize that.
2. Recognize Your Limiting Beliefs
Because you’re a human who grew up in a system, you automatically have limiting beliefs. The educational system indoctrinated you to look at yourself in a certain light.
Even your environment heavily influences the way you think about yourself and others.
As you begin to understand your current narrative, it’s important that you recognize the beliefs that have penetrated your mind.
These beliefs that are not from God often shape how you view yourself, your abilities, and the world around you.
If your not careful, these beliefs will cause you to think that you’re not good enough and that you can’t do what God has created you to do.
By recognizing these limiting beliefs, you get to change them to align with the story that you want to create for yourself.
It also changes the trajectory of future generations because instead of passing down these limiting thoughts, you get to pass down thoughts and beliefs that are more powerful!
3. Fill Your Mind With Truth And Positivity
If you want anything to change, you have to create an environment that is conducive for that change to thrive. A simple example of this is taking care of a pet fish.
When you’re taking care of your fish, it’s important to maintain a healthy environment for the fish to live the best life that it can. The moment when you forget to change the water in the fish tank is the moment the fish can potentially die.
Why? Because the fish was no longer able to withstand its environment.
There’s only so long that you can live in lies and negativity. If you remain in it, you begin to die slowly. Instead, choose to live by filling your mind with the truth of God’s word and positivity.
4. Correct Your Habits
Your habits are a direct reflection of what’s going on in your mind. To rewrite your story, focus on correcting your habits more than your desire for change.
Your new habits will be the change. For example, if you’re constantly hitting snooze when its time to wake up; try moving your phone to another room or getting an alarm clock.
What are your current habits that you need to correct?
5. Rewrite Your Story
Take some time to actually write out your dream life on a piece of paper. What do you look like? Are you living in another country? Is your mental health in a good place?
What do you actually want your story to look like?
Disclaimer: Your story will have some bumps in the road. Putting it on paper helps you to envision the life that you always dreamed of, but you also have to remember that God is sovereign. This means that he is in control and he has the absolute best for you!
Final Thoughts:
I want to remind you to be kind to yourself on your journey. This is a new experience for you even if you tried to rewrite your story in the past.
Be encouraged! This time it will happen.
This post was all about rewriting your story.
Remember you’re destined to win because He got up!
