What Is Positive Self Talk
Self talk is your inner dialogue. It’s all the thoughts that flow through your mind daily. Positive self talk is your true self breaking forth to tell you what you desperately need to hear.
It’s the small faint voice in your mind that reassures you in even the worst situations. This voice doesn’t coddle you, but it does give you an alternate perspective to help you to see the brightest side of any situation.
Would you believe me if I told you that you were made to speak positively about yourself?
Genesis 1:26 “Let us make man in our image after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, the birds of the air, the livestock, over all of the Earth, and every creepy thing that creeps on the Earth”.
You were created in God’s image after his likeness, so by default your self talk is supposed to be positive. Imagine God talking about himself negatively.
It’s impossible because God is fully confident in who he is. He desires for you to be confident as well because you came out of him.
When you start to understand how valuable you are Bestie, positive self talk will be your new language.
Do you realize that you are valuable?
Why Is Positive Self Talk Important
The words you listen to affect your capacity to thrive in an environment. Truthfully, life and death is in the power of your tongue and usually whatever is in your mind comes out of your mouth (Proverbs 18:21).
The way you think about yourself matters. The way you speak to yourself matters just as much. Positive self talk is a way to build your self-confidence and interact with the world around you. It also leaves you feeling great once you practice it!
It’s nice to hear someone compliment you. But if you can’t speak well about yourself, are you really able to receive their compliment?
Using Positive Self Talk Is A Great Way To Learn How To Show Up For Yourself
How often are you looking for others to show up for you? Have you given that energy to yourself yet? What I’m saying is that you can’t expect others to give you what you haven’t given yourself.
Do you support yourself? How are you showing yourself that you are of value? What’s that one thing that you’re desiring out of others that you’re not giving to yourself? Remember there’s order to everything.
You are supposed to love God, love yourself, then love others (Matthew 22:37-40). It’s time for you to show up for God and show up for yourself!
You show up for God by spending time with him and for yourself by taking the time to be alone.
Don’t be so quick to give all of you away. It’s perfectly okay to give to yourself first.
How To Practice Positive Self Talk
Before we get into how to practice positive self talk, you must learn to recognize intrusive thoughts, and to reverse your negative thinking. If you’ve ever thought about others opinion of you, more than likely, that’s what you think about yourself.
For example, if you were to walk into a crowded room and think “they are going to think I’m dumb”. You may be projecting your personal thoughts onto them.
Unless someone says something aloud, you can’t possibly know what they’re thinking.
Now let’s get into how to practice positive self talk!
1. Get To Know Your Creator And Yourself As His Creation
The work that you do won’t matter unless you build it on a solid foundation. When a house is built, the foundation is where the construction team spends the most time. If the foundation isn’t right, everything else will be thrown off.
Getting to know God and yourself is the foundation to positive self talk. Once you begin to value the things that won’t change, your mind will start to change towards yourself.
2. Pay Attention To Your Current Thought And Language
I want you to count how many times you catch yourself thinking or speaking negatively. Once you are conscious of it, the likelihood of you doing it again decreases.
3. Understand That No Situation Is Permanent
The Hebrew concept behind names is pretty interesting. Whatever something is named, that is what it is. What have you been naming your circumstances?
For example, 2020 was a challenging year for most people, but naming it the “worst year ever” is a little extreme. Although the situation wasn’t ideal, it doesn’t take away the good that happened in that year.
Think about how fast time has been going since then. 2020 was literally three years ago. Can you believe that?
4. Remind Yourself Of What You Already Know, Aloud
Have you ever had moments when you knew the truth but the lie sounded better? It could be easy to live through a lie like “I can’t” because it’s safe. This lie won’t require you to grow or stretch yourself at all. Instead it will leave you in your comfort zone and hurt you in the long run.
Speaking aloud about the positivity helps you put things into perspective, relieve stress, and set you up to speak more positively.
5. Find One Thing That You Like, And Hold Onto It Until It Multiplies
This step could be interpreted in multiple ways. You may be at a job you hate as you’re reading this. Instead of speaking about the things that you don’t like; find one thing that you do.
What’s one thing you can speak positively about? Although your situation may not be the best, you can start to speak to it in a more positive way.
Positive self talk is a practice that will always leave you feeling great. Putting what you’ve learned to practice will help you to improve your life one day at a time. This post was all about positive self talk.
Remember you’re destined to win because he got up.
