Hey Besties! Do you want to understand how to put faith over feelings?
I’ve found myself trusting my feelings more times than I’d like to admit. If you’re reading this, I’m sure you’re in the same boat.
It’s easy to trust your feelings when you’re used to them guiding your decisions. Have you ever heard the saying “follow your heart”?
The practice of this could be very dangerous because think about the many times your heart led you to the wrong things.
For instance, have you ever followed your heart and gotten into the wrong relationship? or has your heart’s desire ever been to eat all the junk food you love?
At some point, you’ll have to tune out your heart and its suggestions and allow your knowledge to turn into wisdom. Turning knowledge into wisdom is knowing better and doing better.
It’s time to practice for you to start practicing putting your faith over your feelings. Practice doesn’t make perfect. It makes permanent.
This post is all about how to put faith over feelings.
Are you ready? Let’s geaux!
How To Put Faith Over Feelings
When it comes to putting faith over feelings, you have to access where you are currently. I have four questions for you to answer to get you started.
Every single one of us are different and on our own unique paths in life, but these questions will be able to help you to put things into perspective.
- How long have you been allowing your feelings to lead?
- What areas are you putting your feelings over your faith the most?
- What lies are you believing that prevent you from putting faith over feelings?
- What could you put in place to help you to go against your feelings?
Besties, your feelings are based on what goes on around you. They change quicker than a scared lizard trying to blend in with its surroundings.
Your feelings are like the lights on the dashboard of a car. They are indicators! Your feelings also remind you that you’re not in control and that can be very scary at times.
If you spend more time feeding your faith, it will grow to be strong and the same goes for feelings. Don’t get me wrong, feelings are not bad by any means.
God gave you feelings for a reason; but you’re supposed to be managing them instead of them managing you.
5 Steps To Build Your Faith
Faith is the substance of things hoped for and the evidence of things unseen (Hebrews 11:1 ESV). Living for God and not your feelings starts with learning how to trust him. Trusting God begins with having faith.
Let’s talk about how to build your faith.
1. Have A Vision
There is a misconception that faith is needed for “big” things. Believe it or not, faith isn’t actually supposed to be used for the things you can see with your natural eyes.
Faith is supposed to be used for your vision; the things that you see with your eyes closed. It’s the things that you dream about. The things that seem unattainable.
This could be something as small as changing your diet. You can have faith even if your vision looks nothing like your now.
Your vision has to have a purpose behind it though. What is something that you always dreamed of doing?
Some examples can be developing a healthier diet/lifestyle, owning your own skincare line, going back to school, being debt free, becoming a gentle parent, leading a group, starting a club, etc.
What’s your vision? Write it down no matter how small or big it may be.
2. Become Honest About How You Feel
Your actions are a direct reflection of how you feel. Have you ever seen a toddler throw a tantrum in the middle of the store?
This is exactly what you look like to God when you choose your feelings over your faith. Instead of throwing another tantrum, take five minutes to sit with God and be honest about how you feel.
Talking about your emotions to God can help you build that trust with him and regulate your emotional state. Don’t allow yourself to ignore or deny your feelings; instead pour them out to God.
Through your honesty, you give God access to your soul. Only then is he able to come in and give you what you need.
Whatever you’re feeling in any moment, however big or small, give it to God. He’s always there ready to listen and be your Guide.
Your feelings matter to God in more ways that you know. This is why he tells you to cast your cares unto him (1 Peter 5:7 ESV).
3. Create a Strategy To Go Against Your Feelings
If you don’t play defense, the offensive line will make the touchdown. What can you do to go against your feelings? What are your triggers?
The night before writing this blog, I wrote down one thing on my strategy list that I’m going to try. To get you started, I’ll share it with you:
- Get a piece of paper or go to your notes in your phone.
- Write down the feeling you are feeling and the action that you want to take to soothe/numb this feeling.
- Begin to list out the pros and cons of taking this action.
An example of this is if you have a vision of losing belly fat. You’ve written out your plan to workout three times a week and cut out processed sugars.
It’s one of of your gym days and your mind is telling you that you’ll never lose your belly fat. You are even hearing everyone say that you can’t spot reduce so now you’re starting to become discouraged.
Now you’re thinking about giving up and going get a piece of German chocolate cake. But before you give up completely, take five minutes to sit with God and tell him how you feel.
After talking to God, write out the pros and cons of giving up and eating that cake.
4. Wash Yourself In The Word
Faith comes from hearing, that is, hearing the Good News about Christ (Romans 10:17 ESV). The Good News about Christ is that he brought the government of Heaven back to Earth.
He repaired your relationship with God, gave you eternal life, put his Holy Spirit back inside of you, set you free from sin, has given you the chance to live through your Heavenly citizenship while you are here on Earth, and more!
You can listen to the Word of God through songs, sermons, podcasts, the bible app, and wherever else the Word is. Do this consistently throughout your week to warm up your faith muscles.
5. Exercise Your Faith Muscles
Hearing and reading the Word is like warming up before your workout. To exercise your faith muscles, you have to do what God tells you to do. You have to walk in obedience to God.
There was one time when the disciples asked Jesus to show them how to increase their faith. The Lord answered and said “If you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you could say to this mulberry tree may you be uprooted and planted into the sea and it would obey you”(This is usually where people stop preaching, but there’s more).
He went on to say “When a servant comes in from plowing or taking care of sheep does his master say, ‘Come in and eat with me’? No, he says, ‘Prepare my meal, put on your apron, and serve me while I eat. Then you can eat later.’
And does the master thank the servant for doing what he was told to do? Of course not. In the same way, when you obey me you should say, ‘We are unworthy servants who have simply done our duty ” (Luke 17:5-10 ESV).
There are two things the Lord shows you to do to exercise your faith muscles in Luke 17.
How To Exercise Your Faith
1. Believe In The Power Of Your Position
God created you in his image after his likeness to have dominion over the fish of the sea, the birds of the air, the livestock, all of the Earth, and every creeping crawling thing that creeps upon the Earth (Genesis 1:26 ESV).
This means that God intentionally created you to be just like him. Since He is God…you are a god. Because he is Lord…you’re a lord. Since he is King…you are a king/queen.
He set it up this way and his desire is for you to live in this truth.
2. Obey God With All Your Heart
Obeying God is expressing your love to him. It’s telling Him that you agree with what he has spoken.
When you obey the word of God, you’re exercising your faith. If you’re struggling with obedience, you don’t have to worry because he wants to teach you how to obey him.
What Does The Bible Say About Emotions And Feelings
Before we get into what it says about emotions and feelings, I want you to know how amazing you are. There is no one like you and whatever emotional state you are in right now, know that you can do ANYTHING you put your mind to.
Bestie, I love you so much and God loves you so much more. You are doing so good! Now let’s get into this word!
Ephesians 4:26-27
Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger and give no opportunity to the devil.
Romans 12:9
Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil, hold fast to what is good.
Proverbs 25:28
A man without self control is like a city broken into and left without walls.
Ecclesiastes 3:4-6
There’s a time for everything under the sun. A time to weep and a time to laugh. A time to mourn and a time to dance. A time to cast away stones and a time to gather stones together. A time to embrace and a time to seek. A time to lose and a time to keep. And a time to cast away.
1 Peter 5:7
Cast your anxieties on him because he cares for you.
2 Corinthians 5:7
For we walk by faith, not by sight.
Ephesians 5:18
And do not get drunk with wine for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit.
Proverbs 28:26
Whoever trusts in his own mind is a fool, but he who walks in wisdom will be delivered.
Galatians 5:22-25
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self control. Against these things there is no law. And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit.
Isaiah 43:4
Because you are precious in my eyes and honored and I love you. I give men in return for you, people in exchange for your life.
1 John 3:20
For whenever our heart condemns us God is greater than our heart and he knows everything.
Feelings are powerful, but they are also deceiving. You have feelings for a reason and they are good because God gave them to you.
This is the day that you officially learned how to put faith over feelings! Congrats Bestie!
