Hey Bestie! Let’s talk about how to control your mind.
Contrary to popular belief, you are a spirit having a physical experience. You don’t have a spirit; you ARE a spirit. You’re a triune just like your Creator. A spirit with a soul who lives inside of a body.
The reason that you have a body is to navigate the physical realm that we call Earth while your spirit is the core contents of who you are.
All of this is quite interesting when you dive into it. Your brain and your mind are similar to your spirit and your body being that your brain is the physical organ that houses your mind.
The mind couldn’t exist in this realm without your brain just as you couldn’t be legal here without your body.
Today we’re going to dive into how you can control the contents of your brain aka your mind.
This post will be all about how to control your mind.
Are you ready? Let’s geaux!
How To Control Your Mind From Unwanted Thoughts
Nine times out of ten, the unwanted thoughts that you want to control are those that you deem as negative thoughts. A negative thought is a thought that is twisted and/or wicked, not to be confused with thoughts that you want to suppress.
If you’ve ever had a negative thought that randomly popped into your mind there’s a name for those. Those thoughts are called intrusive thoughts.
In short, an intrusive thought is just like an intruder. These are the thoughts that are unwelcomed and uninvited, but insist on breaking and entering into your mind.
Because you are a spirit in a physical body, everything will be waging war for your mind. Your mind is the battlefield of your body because it is the control center of your being.
All of this is spiritual which is why the weapons of your warfare cannot be of the flesh, but they have to be ones of divine power to destroy strongholds (2 Corinthians 10:4 ESV).
Do you ever notice that some of your thoughts are pictures or movies happening in your mind? This is because your imagination is one of the most precious things that God has given you.
Your imagination is fundamentally important to your mind because it gives you the ability to have faith. This is why it is important to always cast down every imagination and high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God and bring them into the obedience of Christ (2 Corinthians 10:5 KJV).
In other words, when you have an unwanted thought, you should immediately bring it into the submission of Christ. Remind yourself and the thought of what God has already spoken.
How To Let Holy Spirit Control Your Mind
Remember when I said that you’re a triune just like your Creator? Well many people know of God and Jesus, but forget the other piece of God who is Holy Spirit.
There is nothing about Holy Spirit that is spooky or weird. He is God. You cannot catch him like a cold and he doesn’t come only when there’s a good word and some dancing.
When you gave your life to Jesus, Holy Spirit came to live in your heart and mind as God originally intended. He’s always with you and is all around you.
The breath of life that was spoken of in Genesis 2:7 was speaking directly of Holy Spirit. He is known as the Ruach ha-kodesh, Sarayu, or the Prana. All of these names mean the “Breath Of Life”.
To let Holy Spirit control your mind, you have to allow him to do so. The way you allow him to do so is by first confessing with your mouth and believing in your heart that God raised Jesus from the dead (Romans 10:9 ESV).
After that you have to set your mind on the Spirit. Setting your mind on the Spirit will give you life and peace (Romans 8:6 ESV).
To set your mind on the Spirit, you have to follow the innate voice that encourages you to do what pleases God. Understanding what pleases God starts with understanding the original purpose of creation which is to bring Heaven to Earth.
So many truths are found within the Word of God which is the Bible, but you can also find truth in other books that God allows you to read to get closer to him.
I encourage you to start with the Bible and keep it as your foundation while also referencing other books that you’re lead to.
How To Control Your Mind And Emotions
As previously mentioned, you’re a triune just like your Creator. This means that you’re a spirit with a soul inside of a body.
Your soul consists of your mind, will, and emotions. Before you can operate from the spirit, you have to put your mind, will, and emotions in check.
You can do this by submitting to God and developing self-discipline. Self-discipline is encoded in the essence of your being because you are a god. But you have the responsibility to develop this discipline and that will take time, practice and effort on your part.
For the Spirit God gave you does not make you timid, but gives you power, love and self-discipline(2 Timothy 1:7 NIV).
What does your self-care routine look like? Not the maintenance of your exterior, but the self care of the interior.
How do you treat yourself as an eternal being? Do you have a strategy to keep your feelings in check? Are you managing your emotions in a healthy way?
All of these things are important when it comes to controlling your mind and emotions.
How To Control Your Mind From Negative Thoughts
Negative thoughts don’t always have to be intrusive. To combat negative thoughts, you have to first understand why they’re there.
Negative thoughts can only exist because of positive thoughts. All they are are twisted versions of the positive ones. It’s like the ying and yang of life, except you get to control who has dominion over your mind.
Let’s do an inventory of your mind for a second. Are majority of your thoughts positive or negative? If you’re thoughts are mostly negative, I want you to think about why.
Take some time to think about the things you’re consuming. What foods are you eating? Think about the shows you are watching and the books you’re reading.
What about the videos and movies that you’re watching? You can’t forget about the people you’re listening to and are in contact with.
Your environment is what allows the negative or positive thoughts live in your mind. The environment of your being is what you will need to start changing.
Another thing you can think through is your believe system. Are you holding onto any lies spoken over you as a child or are you struggling to believe the truth spoken about you?
Negative thoughts can only fester in your mind if the environment allows them to. I’m not saying that you’ll never get them again once you clean up the environment, but I am saying that it will be hard for them to stay in an environment that is full of truth and positivity.
5 Practical Strategies To Control Your Mind
1. Figure Out Who’s Ruling The Territory
Before you can control your mind, you have to figure out what’s controlling it. Again you are a spirit with a soul inside of a body and your soul consists of your mind, will, and emotions.
Take some time to monitor your thoughts. Write down the thoughts that are reoccurring in your mind. Keep a log of them for about a week to start with.
2. Keep Yourself In The Present Moment
Remember how earlier in the post I was speaking about how your thoughts can be in picture or movie form in your mind? You have the power of cutting the movie off by reminding yourself of where you are and what you are doing.
What I personally do is ask myself aloud “Devyn, where are you right now and what are you doing?” I then answer myself and this brings me back to the present moment.
This is a form of mindfulness. Consider trying this out for yourself and see if it works for you.
3. Discover The Root Behind The Negative Thoughts
There is a root cause of why the negative thoughts are occurring in your mind. Go to your journal/log and begin to pay attention to when these thoughts happen.
In other words, is there something that triggers these thoughts? If so, figure out what that trigger is.
Once you find out what is triggering the thoughts, you have to go within and think about what is the root of the thoughts. You don’t have to do this alone, pray and ask God to show you the root behind them.
4. Combat The Negative Thoughts
The negative thought has to be conformed to the obedience of Christ. What does God’s word say about this? Or what did God specifically say to you regarding this area?
You have the power to accept or deny any thought that comes to your mind.
5. Agree With God
“I am the way, the truth, and the life”. These are the words spoken by the King of kings. Your mind is also territory of the Kingdom of God so allow God to rule there.
Agree with that he has spoken over you even when you feel the opposite.
Who Does God Say You Are:
- You are a god (Psalm 82:6).
- You are a lord (Revelation 17:14).
- You are a king/queen (Revelation 17:14).
- You are holy and without fault in his eyes (Ephesians 1:4-5).
- You are a royal priesthood (1 Peter 2:9).
- You are His prized possession (1 Peter 2:9).
- You are the son of man (Genesis 1:26).
- You are the light of the world (Matthew 5:14-16).
- You are the apple of His eye (Psalm 17:8).
- You are chosen in Him (1 Peter 2:9).
- You are forgiven (Ephesian 4:32).
- You are justified (Galatians 2:16).
- You are holy.
- You are a masterpiece created anew in Christ Jesus to do the good works that were meant for you long ago!
- You are everything that God has fashioned and formed you to be right now. Just as a seed is packed with everything inside of it, so are you.
Why do you have so little faith? Begin to agree with God today because you are everything he has said you are TODAY!
