Moses was a leader and this was outside of his comfort zone! If it were not for God speaking through his father-in-law Jethro, Moses may have found himself battling burnout.
There were layers to Moses’ leadership role. There were so many layers that Moses was even acting as a counselor to the Israelites. We are talking about a whole nation of people who just got free from slavery!
That is a whole lot of different personalities and attitudes! How in the world did Moses think he could have handled all of that alone?
Jethro came in to give Moses advice at the perfect time. He told him to let some of the honest men help him (Exodus 18).
It was a good thing that Moses accepted and applied Jethro’s advice or else he would have found himself battling burnout.
Many people in leadership get caught up in thinking that they have to do everything alone when God never intended this. There are always people in place so that you can avoid battling burnout.
Have you ever battled burnout or are you on the verge to duke it out with him?
What Is Burnout
Burnout could be classified as the overexertion of oneself. It’s filling every need with “me” instead of “He”. This is when you think you can be superhuman.
Let me bust my and everyone’s bubble really quick. We ARE NOT that sufficient or omnipresent.
We cannot be everything to everyone. Our Bestie Forever is capable of being everything we need.
They don’t call him the Great I AM for nothing!

What Causes Burnout?
1. Self-Reliance
Burnout is a direct result of self-reliance. You were never meant to do life alone.
Every one of us was created with a need for God and people. Just as a baby needs its mother and father, we need our heavenly Father and we can depend on him to be everything that we need.
If you need a friend, he is that. When you need a joke, he is your comedian. If you need a coach, he is running plays with you. When you need accountability, he wants to be your partner. If you need a counselor, he is that for you too.
God is whatever you need him to be so do not let self-reliance trick you into battling burnout.
2. Overload
Many times, burnout can be a result of carrying too many burdens. This is not to be mistaken for the roles of your life.
God has made us wonderfully complex (Psalm 139:14), but remember that even God rested. Jesus even found time to get away to get replenished.
The truth is that you cannot be everything to everyone. You are only one person and you are human.
Parents, you do not have to be responsible for both the well-being and the outcome of your children. Only God can provide their purpose and double back and be the voice of reason for both you and them.
You have to leave room for God to teach you how to be a parent and trust that he is leading you the right way.
Pastors, you are not responsible to do the work of the entire body of Christ. Yes, you are the lead servant, but God made it clear that your responsibility is to equip his people to do his work and build up the church who is the body of Christ (Ephesians 4:12).
You still have to seek God for yourself, not only to study but to also maintain a relationship with him!
College students, it is okay to take study breaks and not spend all of your time stressing about finals. Why is this a thing? You will pass if you apply yourself and lean on God in your studies.
Stress is not healthy for anyone in any situation and she is the prerequisite of battling burnout.
3. Lack Of Self-Care
When you do not take care of yourself, you begin to slowly wither away. What you need to understand is how much God values you.
He loves you so much that he knows the number of hairs on your head (Matthew 10:30). He longs for you to accept his rest and to abide in him. Apart from him, we can do nothing and burnout is inevitable.
Sacrificing sleep, failing to nourish your body, and neglecting your needs to be there for others will all end with battling burnout.
Getting to the bag should not be more important than getting to your God.
What Does The Bible Say About Burnout
The true cure to burnout is finding rest in Jesus Christ.
Jesus said “Come to me all who are weary and carrying heavy burdens and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you because I am humble and gentle at heart and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy to bear and the burden I give is light” (Matthew 11:28-30).
God wants to give you rest. He does not want you to be stressed and battling burnout. Let him be who he is offering to be to you.
Let him lead you into the things that will refresh you and restore you. It is okay to let go and trust.
Is There A Way To Avoid Battling Burnout
Yes! Jesus said that he is the vine and we are the branches. Those who remain in him and he in them will produce much fruit. Apart from him, we can do nothing (John 15:5).
When our spiritual life is healthy, it usually flows to our natural life. Getting filled by God and allowing him to work through our lives helps us to avoid burnout.
The work we do here on earth should be energized by God. Your purpose is not meant to persecute you. Work is not everything. It is a part of everything and it should be done with the One who is everything.
If you have or are currently battling burnout, God is encouraging you to seek him for rest. This is something he wants for you because you are important to him.
You were created to be with God, not work for him. Don’t get so caught up with trying to provide that you miss God’s provision. You are a human being, not a human doing so rest in him.
Rest is important and it is key to avoiding the battle of burnout. It is also the key to recover from the beating of burnout.
Our righteousness (our works) is only as good as filthy rags to God (Isaiah 64:6). God wants us; not our works. He knows that we have wants and needs, but if we are not here, how will we obtain any good thing he has to offer?
It is important that you rest because rest helps you resist the battle of burnout.
Remember you are destined to win “against burnout” because he got up!
