Learning To See Yourself As God Sees You

Let’s talk about seeing yourself as God sees you.

learning to see yourself as God sees you

Emotional negligence directly affects one’s self esteem and worth. It has affected mine and because of it I allowed my identity to be rooted in things other than Christ (even after giving my life to Him).

If Christ isn’t at the center of your life, then something else will be and that thing will try to shape and mold your identity.

The Bible says in Colossians 3:3 that our real life is hidden with Christ in God. It also says in Matthew 6:21 where your treasure is, that is where your heart will be.

It’s time that we identify our treasures to find where our hearts lie.

This will help us to find where we’ve placed our identity. Then we can give it to God and begin to see ourselves the way He sees us.

In this post, we will discuss some ways to identify your treasure, we will learn mental shifts to give your treasure to God, and how to practically begin to see ourselves the way God sees us.

This post is all about seeing yourself as God sees you.

Are you ready? Let’s geaux!

What Causes You Not To See Yourself The Way God Does

Your circumstances don’t get to define you. You were sent into this life as a completed being in Christ.

Knowing this doesn’t erase the fact that life still happens, but what if this knowledge helps you to shift your perspective?

What if every hurdle you face could be looked at as proof that you were created to move mountains by faith? Suppose you took the position of overcomer in every unfavorable situation?

What would your life look like then?

The reason why many of us fail to see ourselves the way God sees us is because of ignorance and choices.

Ignorance because many of us have no idea about the love of God, His character, and the reason for our existence.

Choice because we end up walking by sight instead of by faith like we were designed to.

In other words, we fix our eyes on what is earthly and never get to experience life how God intended.

It’s time that we start to treasure what God treasures.

Part of doing so is to become one with Him and to see ourselves as He does.

Where Is Your Treasure

We all have things that we treasure. These are things that we cherish, value, and keep carefully in order to sustain them.

Treasures are not always physical things. Jesus says “Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” (Matthew 6:21 NIV).

This means that in order to find where your heart is, you must take inventory of what you treasure.

Here are a few questions that can help you find out where your treasure may be:

  • What do you spend the most time on?
  • Where do you spend the most money?
  • What has your attention?
  • What do you prioritize?
  • What has been the hardest thing for you to give up? (Think about what God has been asking you to let go of)

Once you get an idea of what it might be, take it to God, and ask Him to reveal the truth about where your heart is.

I encourage you to pray through this. This is something that you get to partner with God on and it will help you to grow into the person He created you to be.

How to Give Your Treasure To God

Giving your treasure to God doesn’t have to be complicated.

It actually can be quite simple, but it’s not always easy to give up something that you love.

This picture is the perfect representation of giving your treasure to God:

Truths About Giving Your Treasure To God

  • God is your original treasure because He is your Source
  • Whatever you give up for God, He’ll bless you with more (Matthew 19:27, Mark 10:28)
  • What you’re giving up no longer serves you
  • What you’re giving up is nothing compared to what God has for you.
  • Your identity isn’t in anything that can perish
  • God is trying to help you tear down an idol
  • Your treasure is a personal pleasure and it isn’t blessing others God’s way.

3 Steps To Give Your Treasure To God

Giving your treasure to God will take a mental shift. Everything starts within the mind including your actions.

Here are three mental shifts to help you give your treasure to God:

1. Know That God Loves You And That You Are A Piece Of Him

1 John 4:16 NIV-And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them.

God is love. He doesn’t have love; He IS love.

You and I were created to be targets of God’s love. Even deeper than that, we are extensions of Love himself.

When I think about giving my treasures over to God, I think about how treasures can get in between my relationship with God.

If I am a piece of God, then I don’t want anything blocking Him including the things that I love.

True love requires sacrifice and if He gave himself for me why shouldn’t I be willing to do the same?

Practical Step: Read and think about 1 John 4:7-21.

2. Believe That You Are Better Off When You’re Only Attachment Is Christ

Hebrews 12:1 NIV-Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.

This life is full of distractions. Many of our distractions end up becoming our attachments.

What if I told you that your only attachment should be Christ? Think about it. In Him, we live, breathe and have our being.

He created us to glorify Him and one day we will return to Him to give Him an account.

To me, this means that He should be our only attachment.

It is Him that belongs at the center of our lives because we belong to Him.

Practical Step: Identify the distractions in your life. Begin to ask God to help you to cut them off.

3. Understand That This Life Is Designed For You To Learn And Reflect God’s Nature

Matthew 5:48 NIV-Be perfect, therefore, as your Father is perfect.

What’s the purpose of life? Have you ever stopped and thought about this question?

For many, life isn’t meaningful or deep. But you and I know better.

This life is designed for us to learn and reflect God’s nature back to God.

Imagine sending your child to a foreign land on a special assignment. Your child was instructed to live according to their home country and to always check in with you.

During the course of their assignment, they start to live like those in the foreign land. When you find out, you redirect your child in a loving way and explain the importance of staying focus.

In this scenario, the child represents you and the assignment represents your purpose.

God sent you to the Earth and your job is to learn to live through your true culture in Christ.

In other words, there is meaning behind why you exist and you’re not here by happenstance.

Practical Step: Go to God and ask Him to reveal your unique assignment. Begin to ask Him why He decided to create you.

How To See Yourself As God Sees You

1. Read Your Bible

The Bible is your manual for life. It is full of truths about who God is, who you are, and how to have a successful life by God’s standards.

Reading the Bible is getting direct insight from the mind of Christ.

2. Talk To God

You were designed to have a healthy relationship with God.

Even if none of your earthly relationships are healthy, this relationship can be.

God wants you to talk to Him and He says that you can come to Him about anything (See Hebrews 4:16 NIV).

Remember that your relationship with God is personal. A healthy relationship will require you to open up and be your full self.

You are safe in your relationship with God.

3. Talk To Yourself

Everyone talks to themselves whether they admit to it or not.

When you talk to yourself, you can use this as a form of meditation and encouragement.

Tell yourself about what God says about you.

You can do this by recording yourself speaking His word or by using affirmation cards.

Check out our scripture based self-love affirmation cards by clicking the image down below:

4. Watch Reaffirming Messages

Watching sermons and podcasts centered around the word of God is a great way to stir yourself up in Christ.

Seeing yourself as God does starts with seeing Him.

Whenever something is highlighted in a sermon, go to the Word for yourself to see what God says.

Once you go to the Word, you will find that God will highlight things about who you are as well.

5. Create Flashcards

Creating your own flashcards is an easy way to affirm yourself in Christ.

Seeing yourself as God sees you will require you to study and repeat the truth aloud.

Flashcards help incorporate visuals to help with recall and reinforce memory.

You can even utilize online resources like Quizlet and Canva to create your own today!

6. Allow Your Circumstances To Be Proof Of Who God Says You Are

Your circumstances are like an inverted mirror. The image is upside down or rotated in some way.

When God speaks a word to you, you must have faith in Him rather than what you see.

For example, since God has said you are accepted; you may experience lots of rejection.

Everything will try to tell you the opposite of what God has said of you.

But remember you have the power to partner with God and hold fast to the truth.

Let’s make a promise to each other that we will begin to see ourselves the way God sees us. Christ will be at the center of our lives and everything else will come second.

My encouragement to you is to never give up, keep pressing in, and you will see God’s beauty in your life.

A quick recap of giving your treasure to God:

  1. Know That God Loves You And That You Are A Piece Of Him
  2. Believe That You Are Better Off When You’re Only Attachment Is Christ
  3. Understand That This Life Is Designed For You To Learn And Reflect God’s Nature

Remember that this is a mental shift. We must know, believe, and understand that God is He. He is the only one that should be at the center of our lives. For me, the most challenging thing is the feeling of stepping into the unknown. That feeling is always new for me even after all these years. What have you found most challenging about giving your treasure to God?  Let’s talk about it in the comments down below.
