Hey Besties! There are times where we often overlook the power of obedience, yet it is crucial to living life in the Kingdom of Heaven.
Obeying God is not always easy, but it’s an important part of how we grow in faith and relationship with God. Last week we talked about how and why we should obey God.
We also found out why most of us struggle to do so.
This post will be all about the reason why obedience is so important to God, how Jesus learned to obey, and key examples of obedience in the Bible.
Are you ready? Let’s geaux!
Obedience to God is more about you than him. Before we get knee deep into our topic, I want to ask you what’s the last electronic you bought from Amazon?
Each product that you purchase comes with an owner’s manual that you probably don’t bother to read, right? The owner’s manual is quite interesting if you open it up.
It has everything about the product inside, but the most interesting part is the Warnings page. This part of the manual is filled with words like “always”, “only”, “do not, and never.
All of these instructions are for your safety and so that you can use the product just as the manufacturer intended.
Why Is Obedience So Important To God
Obedience means to hear God’s word and act on what he spoke. When you obey God, you show that you trust him. The word obey simply means “ to trust”.
When you respond with obedience to God’s word, you’re responding with trust and faith. You may have been taught that you must obey God to receive things, but it’s much deeper than that.
You aren’t supposed to obey God for things, but to live a life of righteousness, joy, and peace just as you were created to.
Obedience is important to God, because he created you to trust him. Each relationship you’ve ever been in requires some level of trust. Your relationship with God is no different.
Your relationship with God is probably the most complex relationship you’ve ever been in. God is both your Abba and your King.
Your Abba is the One who created you and your Ultimate Source while, your King is the One who is responsible for your every need.
The word king actually means owner. Before you jump the gun behind the word owner, think about it from a pure place.
When you’re renting an apartment, or a house, you have what’s called a landlord, who is the primary owner of that estate.
Since you didn’t create yourself, you have an owner or a Lord which is Jesus. Do you understand?
Obedience is important to God because he is your Abba and your King. All he wants is for you to benefit from being both his child and his citizen.
What Does It Mean That Jesus Learned Obedience
Jesus, the son of God came down from the home country to restore to us what Adam lost. His time on Earth was very unique.
The first man, Adam, was a fully grown man while Jesus was born as a baby. Jesus had the full human experience like you and me.
He was a child who had to be his parents, he had to obey the law, and he lived his life submitted to the Father’s will.
When the scriptures say, Jesus learned obedience, it means that he learned what it was like to be human. He experienced life as we know it, but never sinned.
His suffering was experiencing all the repercussions of sin, just as we do. He witnessed what it was like to be hurt, in pain, and face sickness, persecution, and oppression.
Jesus learned obedience as if he was in training. Now he is our High Priest, and the One who we can turn to in the ups and downs of life.
Examples Of Obedience In The Bible
Obedience is simply showing God that you trust him at his word. It’s having faith and showing that faith through actions.
There are many examples of obedience stories that are famous so we’re going to look at some that aren’t so popular.
Jephthah In The Bible
The name Jephthah means “he is open”. Jephthah was a Gileadite and the son of a prostitute. He was driven out from his father’s house by his half brothers, for not having the same mom.
Jephthah didn’t allow that to discourage him because he became known as a mighty warrior. After some time, Jephthah was sought out by his half brothers to save them.
They needed him to defeat the Amorites. One day the Spirit of the Lord was upon Jephthah and Jephthah made a vow to Lord saying, “If you give the Amorites into my hand, then whatever comes out of the doors of my house to meet me when I return in peace from the Amorites shall be yours”.
What Jephthah didn’t know is that it would be his daughter coming out to meet him. She was his only child, but he followed through on his word to the Lord.
His daughter never knew a man, and she lived the rest of her life as a virgin.
Abel In The Bible
The Hebrew word for Abel means vanity, breath, or vapor. Abel is best known as the second son of Adam and Eve.
He was a keeper of sheep. The Bible says that he and his brother Cain brought offerings to the Lord. Abel brought the first born of his flock, and their fat portions while Cain brought the fruit of the ground.
The Lord accepted Abel’s offering, but rejected Cain’s. It could’ve been because Abel gave to the Lord first, and made sure that blood was in the offering.
While the reason is not clearly stated, Cain killed Abel because of his jealousy. The Bible says Abel’s faith commended him as righteous and his faith still speaks.
Sarah In The Bible
Sarah was the wife of Abraham, who is known as the father of faith. She was previously named Sarai and she was also barren.
God promised her and Abraham that she would bare a son, and many years later, he delivered on the promise.
Sarah’s belief in her old age allowed her to receive the power to conceive.
Obeying God is not always easy, but it is an important part of how you grow in faith and relationship with God.
It’s essential to how you live life on Earth. Even Jesus learned obedience through being human and experiencing life as we know it.
If you ever find yourself struggling to obey, remind yourself of who you are to God and who he is to you. You are a citizen of Heaven and his child.
God is your Abba and your King. Obedience is more about you than God because you benefit when you will obey.
This post was all about the reason why obedience is so important to God, how Jesus learned to obey, and key examples of obedience in the Bible.
Remember you’re destined to win because He got up!
