Hey Besties! Understanding the why is always greater than the what. There is an underlying reason why your garage is cluttered. Today will begin to understand the why behind the clutter.
Before we get started, I want to give a recap to anyone who may be joining us for the first time. We are in a series called Facing Yourself where we are discussing our cluttered garages aka our hearts.
If you are just joining us, I encourage you to read the first two blogs of the series:5 Key Qualities You Need To Embrace Your Inner Child and How Often Do You Declutter Your Garage?
Ready Besties? Let’s geaux!
Piling things in your garages take little to no work, but decluttering? Oh, that takes some work! Wouldn’t it be nice if you wouldn’t have to declutter and things would magically go away? That would be amazing, but unfortunately, that isn’t how life works.
As you know, your garage did not get cluttered overnight so it will not get decluttered overnight. Some of your decluttering may take a couple of years while others may take months.
However long it may be prepare to ride things out for as long as it takes because your healing depends on it and that is what is important.
A Little About My Garage
My garage started working its way up to being cluttered when I was a little girl. My innocence was tried and I had no recollection of how to recover.
From there, I found myself experiencing hurts on top of hurts and I was left trying to clean as much as I could. What I learned is that when something is not cleaned properly, it is impossible not to see the dirt and the residue that’s left behind.
Someone may not be able to see the effects of your garage from far away, but if they get close enough they will see the prolonged pain that produced the clutter in your life.
It’s kind of like when you are sweeping and there’s that little line of dirt that just won’t get in the dustpan. Not extremely dirty but still enough dirt that you can tell that it is not cleaned.
Some people may be strong enough to win the battle against that dirt line, but I am guilty of sweeping the dirt to the nearest corner. Does anyone else have the same testimony? No? Just me? Okay.
A question I have is how many of your garages have been compiled of dirt that has been swept in the corner?
When you choose not to deal with an issue head-on your garage is not being decluttered. It is being rearranged.
Understanding Why
To start your process of recognizing what’s in your garage, you need to be able to understand what made you place the items in it. More than likely, the items in your garage are items of similarity.
By understanding the why behind the item, you will be able to recognize the what. I remember noticing something in my room, not understanding why it was there. It turned out that the item I found was only a piece of another item.
When I put the two items together, it then made sense as to why it was there. There are many instances when you find anger, but the anger is just a piece or a byproduct of another item that you have not found yet.
It’s much like the root and the fruit of a tree. Sometimes you can’t identify a tree without the fruit, but you still have to get to the root in order for the fruit to grow.
In order to figure this out, you must examine the pieces in your garage and bring them to the One who can help you continue the process of understanding why.
God knows your garage better than you. He has created your garage and he was there when the first item was placed in it.
His desire is for you to declutter your garage so that you can live a life that you love and a life that also glorifies Him.
The Items In Your Garage Don’t Define You
You do not need to be ashamed of any item in your garage or how it got there. “If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come” (2 Corinthians 5:17).
You are no longer defined by your garage for your identity is in Christ. In Him, you are
- Loved.
- Whole.
- Redeemed.
- Free.
- Holy and without fault.
You can approach the throne of grace with boldness knowing that your Father sees, hear, and fully knows you. The blood of Jesus has covered you and he defines you, not the items in your garage.
More About My Garage
There were many times in my life when I thought the items in my garage defined me.
Because my innocence had been tried, it produced something in me that I had a hard time controlling. I could’ve easily believed that the effects of what happened to me were who I am, but I chose to believe what God said of me.
I know that the anger I experience is only the fruit of what happened when I was a child.
The anger is only a piece of another item in my garage. Anger is just the fruit and the abuse I experienced is the root of the anger.
Besties, I will keep reassuring you that you are not alone. Each blog I am able to write is not only for you, but it is for me as well. We are walking through these things together hand in hand with our Bestie Forever.
Why Is My Garage Is Cluttered
If you are able to recognize an item in your garage then it is time for you to do some questioning. Since one of my items is anger, I would begin to ask myself questions like:
- Why am I angry?
- What caused this anger?
- Am I angry at what just happened or did this situation tap on an old would that hasn’t healed?
I would not answer these questions alone. I would begin to talk to God about them so that he can bring me through the process of healing and get me to the true root of why I am angry.
Again, you are not what you find in your garage. Facing yourself is all about recognizing who you are so you can fight against who you are not. Your garage will be decluttered in the name of Jesus. BELIEVE IT!
Don’t focus on when but take each step given one foot in front of the other. You will become your authentic self in the name of Jesus.
Examples of what some of your items may be:
- Overeating
- Overworking
- Anger
- Depression
- Rejection
- Gossip
- Sexual promiscuity
- Negative self talk
- Judgment
- Rage
- Abusive relationships
- Lack of self-love/value
- Anxiety
- Pride
- Poverty
- Low self-esteem
And the list goes on. All of these items have a root cause. There is a reason that you fell into these patterns and now you are starting the process of understanding why. You did not just decide one day that you would jump from bed to bed or emotionally eat or cut yourself.
There is a reason behind the items in your garage and Holy Spirit will help you find the root. All you have to do is ask Him.
All that is required of you is to take the step to recognize one item in your garage. Do not try to recognize more than one item unless Holy Spirit leads us to do so.
This is a process that will take some self-awareness. Understanding why is not going to happen overnight.
Remember you do not have to be ashamed of any item in your garage. God loves you right where you are and he can’t love you more than he already does.
He is walking with you toward your 2nd step cheering you on. You are never alone Bestie.
P.S.
There is a reason why the pace is slow in this series. When facing yourself, you have to tread lightly and gradually bring your findings to God. He then will bring forth your authentic self.
Remember you are destined to win because He got up!
